The Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit includes hundreds of locations, creatures, objects, sounds and spell motions, that you can use to make your own code creations, and tell your own stories in the Wizarding World. 📖
For this project, I used some of the scarier elements of the coding kit, to create a spooky story, set in the depths of the Forbidden Forest! 👻
Let’s build it together. 🏗️
Start off by clicking the New Creation button (highlighted in blue) on your Profile.
This opens up a blank coding window with every object, sound, and spell motion unlocked.
Click the background button (highlighted in blue) to choose a background.
For this creation, I chose the spookiest location in Hogwarts (highlighted in blue), the Forbidden Forest!
Once you’ve chosen your background, it appears in the Canvas on the right of your screen.
Time to code!
This creation contains two pieces of code that are built out of individual code blocks.
The first piece of code runs when the app starts - and creates the spooky mist across the bottom of the Canvas, and a shadowy Death Eater in the centre.
The second piece of code runs when you use the Expelliarmus Spell Motion - It creates an explosion. Knocks over, shrinks, and removes the Death Eater on the screen. And creates a new Death Eater at a random location, which gradually increases in size, giving the illusion that it’s walking towards you!
All of the code blocks you need are in the trays on the left of your screen (highlighted in blue). Match the colour of the blocks in the images below with the colour of the dots next to the trays to find the blocks you need.
A Death Eater in the Forbidden Forest.
This is the first piece of code that you need to create - It runs when the app starts, and creates the spooky mist across the bottom of the Canvas, and a shadowy Death Eater in the centre.
You’ll find the blocks you need in the Events, Control, Particles, Variables, Colour, and Objects trays on the left of your screen.
Tip: Try changing the particle start and end colours, the particle type, and the particle start and end size, to make the mist even more spooky!
Defeating a Death Eater.
This is the second piece of code that you need to create - It runs when you use the Expelliarmus Spell Motion.
Starting with 10 particle bangs, it knocks over, shrinks, and removes the Death Eater. Before creating a new Death Eater at a random place, which gradually increases in size, giving the illusion that it’s walking towards you!
The code blocks you need, are in the Events, Control, Particles, Colour, Objects, and Variables trays on the left of your screen.
Tip: This piece of code uses the same control/object blocks 7 times. Try using the copy, and paste keyboard shortcuts to save time!
Don’t forget to Save your creation to Kano World so that everyone can see what you've made.
Click on the save button (highlighted in blue).
Then add a name, and a description that lets people know what your creation does, and how they can play with it.
Now get out there and defeat some Death Eaters!
