Easter Egg Competition: Code Your Own Egg!

This Easter, we’re giving Kano coders the chance to win fantastic prizes, by coding their own Easter Egg.

To help you get started, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide, that will run you through the basics, and show you how to make three egg-cellent creations with code.

Start With a Blank Egg

Every new creation, in the Kano Easter Egg Competition, begins with three code blocks in the middle of the screen, and an egg on the Canvas to the right.

The code blocks you start with, form the foundation of all Kano Easter Egg Competition entries.

Let’s take a look at them.

Draw on egg

This block creates the egg shape on the canvas.

Any blocks you connect to “draw on egg”, will make changes inside the egg shape.

When app starts

This block creates anything outside of the egg shape - like the background color.

Draw: Set background color

This block sets the background color. Click on the yellow filled block, to choose a color from the Kano Code palette.

Make A Spotty Egg

You can make a spotty egg by adding six code blocks to your new egg creation.

All of the code blocks are color coordinated to the trays on the left of your screen.

Let’s break the code down into two bite-sized chunks.

1. Draw on egg

You’ll find the blocks you need in the Control, Draw, Math, and Color trays on the left of your screen.

Tip: Try changing the color of the egg, the number of times that the code will repeat, and the random numbers to see what will happen.

2. When app starts

You don’t need to add any blocks to this piece of code.

Tip: Try changing the background color.

Make A Stripey Egg

To make our egg stripey, we’re going to use lists to create the stripes, and coordinates to make sure they appear in the right place.

All of the code blocks are color coordinated to the trays on the left of your screen.

Let’s break the code down into two bite-sized chunks.

1. Draw on egg

You’ll find the blocks you need in the Variables, Lists, Colors, Math, Draw, and Control trays on the left of your screen.

Tip: Try changing the colors in the list, to give your egg multi-colored stripes.

2. When app starts

You don’t need to add any blocks to this piece of code.

Tip: Try changing the background color.

Make A Spotty Egg on a Stripey Background

Now we're going to bring together the code from the first two egg creations, to make a spotty egg, on a stripey background.
